Wondering how our Production Designer, Joel Guevara created the miniature WVCO Groovin' studio and thunderstorm clouds?
The base for the miniature set all began with a 1/2 inch foam board, cut into a 4×4 piece! Next, the glue was layered over the board with a brush, to act as the adhesion for the the grass vinyl that would be placed.
The clouds for the storm above the studio were made from the cotton insides of 3 pillows (spooky, we know)!
The clouds are held together by fence wiring and fishing line. Their dark and spooky storm effect is created by some spray paint!
Now for the heart of the miniature, the WVCO Groovin' Tower!
It was built by pieces of a miniature tower, and the letters were spray painted to have a metallic finish!
The rest is a secret!
Joel's inspiration came from the set of Ghostbusters 1984 in which they built miniatures for.
Miniatures on sets have always been a way to set the scene like on Georges Méliès 'A Trip to the Moon' in 1902 or George Lucas 'Starwars' in the 70s! Since then, miniatures have been used to create all kinds of movie magic! Today we use it to set the sci-if and horror scene for our movie Air Waves!
Thanks to our talented Production Designer, Joel Guevara, We are among the few Miami Dade College, School of Entertainment & Design Technology students to incorporate miniatures into our thesis short film Air Waves, and are proud to keep this movie tradition alive!
